Lake Kaco, located in the Kerinci Seblat National Park (TNKS), is a popular tourist destination. However, after a roar believed to be from a tiger was heard, the tourist attraction was closed for three days, from Monday (30/12/2024) to Thursday (2/1/2025).

“Lake Kaco has been closed since Monday afternoon and will reopen after a special team ensures the site is safe,” said Hamka, the gatekeeper and manager of Lake Kaco, on Tuesday (31/12/2024).

Hamka explained that the temporary closure was made after reports from four visitors from Bungo Regency. The visitors heard a roar when they were about to return to the jungle entrance. The sound is believed to have come from a Sumatran tiger that was near the monitoring trail to Lake Kaco.

Hamka added that a special team from TNKS will enter the site on January 2, 2025 to ensure safety. However, at this time, some teams are still on New Year’s holiday. The decision to reopen Kaco Lake will depend on the results of the team’s inspection.

“The four visitors from Bungo, consisting of one woman and three men, looked panicked and pale when they reported this incident. They claimed to have heard a sound similar to a tiger roaring on the monitoring trail,” Hamka said.

Similar accounts were given by three other tourists, Bapeng, Dayat and Dimas. They said that while returning from Lake Kako before sunset, they heard the sound of a tiger roaring on the trail between Post 2 and Post 1, near the river.

“We heard a roar from the right side of the trail leading to the entrance of the jungle. The sound was clearly heard near the river,” said one of the tourists.
