How the calculation flows

Buy price Sell price Quantity Fee %
(Sell·Qty·(1−fee)) − (Buy·Qty·(1+fee))
Profit / loss + return %

The inputs you enter feed a fixed formula to produce the result. Change any input to see how sensitive the outcome is.

Conceptual diagram

Cost (buy + fee) Proceeds (sell − fee) Profit Profit = Proceeds − Cost (fees deducted on both sides)
Illustrative: your profit is what remains after subtracting the all-in cost from the after-fee proceeds. Fees apply on both the buy and the sell.

What the profit/loss calculator does

The Crypto Profit/Loss calculator works out the real result of a trade after fees on both the buy and the sell. It is easy to overestimate a gain by forgetting that fees are paid twice — once entering and once exiting — and this tool makes that cost explicit.

How it works

Your all-in cost includes the buy-side fee; your proceeds are reduced by the sell-side fee. Profit is simply what remains.

Profit = (Sell × Qty × (1 − fee)) − (Buy × Qty × (1 + fee))

Worked example

Illustrative example — your figures will differ

Buy 0.5 of a coin at $30,000, sell at $45,000, with 0.2% fees each side (the calculator’s defaults).

  • All-in cost: 0.5 × $30,000 × 1.002 = $15,030
  • Net proceeds: 0.5 × $45,000 × 0.998 = $22,455
  • Profit: $22,455 − $15,030 = $7,425  →  return ≈ +49.4%
Cost, proceeds and profit on the example trade (illustrative)
Cost (buy+fee)$15,030
Proceeds$22,455
Profit$7,425

Fees quietly raise your break-even

You do not break even when the price returns to your entry — you break even slightly above it, because fees ate into both sides. The higher the fee, the higher the price has to climb just to get back to zero.

Round-trip fee Break-even move needed
0.2% each side ≈ +0.40%
0.5% each side ≈ +1.00%
1.0% each side ≈ +2.02%

How to use it

  1. Enter your buy price, sell price and quantity.
  2. Add the fee percentage your exchange charges.
  3. Read the profit/loss and the return; flip the buy and sell prices to model a losing trade.

Limits to keep in mind

  • It models a flat percentage fee; real costs can include slippage, spreads and network gas.
  • It does not account for tax on realised gains, which varies by jurisdiction.
  • A single trade’s return says nothing about the risk you took to earn it.
